Hello there, friend! It's time for another Design School Sunday, and today I will share some tips about how to decorate your bedroom.

I'm writing this entry from the coziness of my couch, I found this Banana Bread recipe online, and I'm giving it a try, so far it smells so good! I also might or might not be sipping on a glass of white wine (are you team red or white?).
If you are visiting from the future, COVID-19 is in full swing in NYC right now, so I'm staying at home for me, but most importantly for others, so baking, cooking, wine, Netflix, and FaceTiming friends and family are now part of the new regular. If you are visiting from the present, I'm sending you so much love, please stay inside, healthy and let's all stay connected (don't you love the digital era?), we got this, this also shall pass.

One of my favorite room at home is the bedroom; it's the place where you start and end your day, a place to count your blessings, stay energized, feel secure, and have a good night's sleep. If none of the other rooms in your house or apartment make sense for you, the bedroom is the place to start creating your home. I always, always recommend when you move to a new place, start with organizing and decorating your bedroom! That will help you to set some ground and making you feel at home.

So here are some tips to keep in mind about how to make your bedroom a zen retreat, mindfully decorating your surroundings, and bringing you a sense of meaning and connection. I love decorating spaces that tell a story and help you feel connected with who you are and what you love, feeling warm and welcoming. I hope these tips about how to decorate a bedroom, help you make it yours and achieve a great look but also a great feeling.

Throw Pillows

Is there a best way to add coziness, texture, and character to any room than with throw pillows? My latest favorite is XL lumbar pillows like the ones we have on the site, (oh, if you haven't yet go check our collection of throw pillows) in case you want to keep things simple and just have a few pillows in your bed, I have around 11 pillows in my bed at some point #guilty

Storage Solutions

And I'm talking about storage baskets, my favorites are jute or seagrass not only they will keep the clutter away, but they will also add some natural elements and texture to your room.

Decorative Mirrors

Oversized mirrors, especially if you have a small bedroom, they will make your bedroom look more spacious and also will help to distribute more light around the room, plus they look so good! Small mirrors are great to complete your wall decor, and these Peruvian mirrors are my favorite for the job.

Paint

Maybe you would like a moody bedroom, or airy and bright it's what makes your heart race, or perhaps some relaxing colors like soft green or blue. The decision is yours, choose one that will make you feel relax and that YOU like. If you don't want to commit to painting the whole bedroom, add some accent wall, you can also use paint to create a beautiful bedhead.

Curtains

Here is where you can make a significant impact on the rest of the room, think about the textures and weight of the curtains, also is a perfect way to add patterns and color to the bedroom, or if you want to keep things more neutral go for a solid soothing color.

Lightning

Light fixtures can add and enhance the beauty of a room, think about what will go better with your bedroom decor, rattan, brass, or metal? Choose the light fixture size in proportion with the size of the room; small bedrooms will go with small light fixtures, also think about the bedside lamps, would you like a nightstand lamp or you want to have a more modern look and have wall scones instead? Whatever works better for you.

Wall Decor

Above the bed decor: You can choose an oversized print that means something to you, maybe a picture from a past vacation, or a quote you love, a gallery wall with objects that you like, and photos of your family. The rest of the wall decor around the bedroom will help you to keep adding your personality around the room but also will make everything work together. Think about a theme for your wall decor, or maybe go for the same color palette to make everything look cohesive and balanced. Macrame's are big now, and I love how they add so much interest in a room, here are the ones that I created for my store, what do you think?

Decorative Rug

Just like the curtains, the rug will help you add texture, patterns and a feeling to the room, choose a color that will keep the bedroom balanced, neutrals are my favorite here. Still, a bold rug can keep things interesting, just remember decor doesn't have to compete but help each other to add beauty to the room and make it feel and look balanced. Check some of my rugs here.

Add Layers to Your Bed

All the layer in your bed matter, choose the bedding that will make you feel good, I particularly love Linen sheets, but maybe you like cotton, the decision is yours. Add some decorative throws to make it feel and look cozy, the colors here are essential as is in the rest of the bedroom. Check our collection of throws for some inspiration.

  • I love these tips! And I love that you didn’t forget about plants in the bedroom. There’s so much research showing how great plants are both for our physical health and also our mental and emotional health. I’ve even come across the study that says certain plants in the bedroom can boost humidity which is especially great during the winter months and in dry climates year round

  • Yes! Mirrors add so much to a space, and I always seem to need more storage. I love your suggestions. And I’m going to have to show this to my husband to prove that throw pillows truly are necessary. :)
